Medical Insurance Improving Nation's Health?
The government have launched a big campaign called Change for Life which aims to improve the nation's fitness. Their message is simple Eat less, move more and live longer. They are targeting families with the aim of improving the long term health prospects of our young people. Statistics show that 9 out of 10 children today will grow up with dangerous levels of fat in their bodies.
The campaign, which is backed by an amusing TV advert and website, encourages people to take small easy steps towards better long and short term health. Among many other things it encourages the reduction of fat, increase in exercise, portion control and eating 5 fruit and veg a day. In addition to this Gordon Brown is also supporting GMTV's Get Motivated Campaign and, amusingly, appeared with Mr Motivator last Thursday!
Health insurance companies are also trying to inform their clients about improving their health. Dr Rebecca Small, Assistant Medical director for BUPA UK Health Insurance said that small steady steps can provide required results and that a 'diet based on fruit and vegetables will not only leave you feeling better, it will also leave you with more pounds in your pocket.' BUPA has an area on its website dedicated to information about healthy living.
If your lifestyle puts you at a serious risk of developing medical conditions then you may find that your private medical insurance premiums are high. So not only are you at risk if you are not following recommended lifestyle changes but you will also be out of pocket. An alternative way to approach this is to reward people with healthier lifestyles.
Pru-Health actively encourage you to look after your health via their Vitality programme which is designed to promote 'an active lifestyle and improve your health'. They have a range of incentives including a personal Health Review which assesses your needs and encourages you to stop smoking, get regular health screens as well as to exercise and eat well. You can collect points for taking preventative measures, including participating in regular exercise (at reduced cost through fitness companies Cannon, La Fitness and Virgin Active) and the more points you get the lower your premiums go. You can even get extra points for buying fresh fruit and veg at Sainsbury's!
