French Government Demands Expats Have Private Health Insurance
New legislation in France demands that non-French European Union Citizens residents take out private medical insurance. With all of Europe tightening its belt this is just another blow to expatriates who are finding it hard to make ends meat with the pound so low against the euro.
Previously British residents working France needed to apply for a health insurance card (carte vital) which would entitle them to free state healthcare like French citizens. However with the introducrtion of the new legislation this no longer applies. For up to date information people can obtain details from the L'Assurance Maladie website, unfortunately however this is only available in French.
Medical insurance for British Citizens abroad is available from international health insurance companies who will cover you when you are living and/or working abroad. Alternatively if only spend a proportion of your time abroad Standard Life offer 90 days Worldwide Travel cover as standard on their Primecare Plus policy.
